BOCCWorld AIDS Day is Dec. 1

On Dec. 1, Mecklenburg County will join cities and towns across the world in recognizing World AIDS Day. This is a great opportunity to show support for those living with HIV, to help eliminate HIV stigma and remember those who have passed away.

Locally, our Public Health Department will offer HIV testing throughout the day to students at UNC Charlotte. In addition, the Charlotte chapter of Black Treatment Advocates Network, a multi-agency collaboration led by the Public Health Department, will hold a World AIDS Day event at UNC Charlotte Center City from 6- 9 p.m. The event is free to attend. More information can be found here.

It is important to remember that HIV/STD testing is available weekdays at either of our Public Health locations: 2845 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte or 249 Billingsley Road, Charlotte. Services are free to patients. HIV/Syphilis testing is provided on a walk-in basis -- no appointment necessary. Tests are free and confidential. Appointments are needed for STD screening and can be made by calling 704-336-6500.

For more information, contact Public Health Director Dr. Marcus Plescia at 980-314-9020 or Marcus.Plescia@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov.

LIEAP Applications to be Accepted Beginning Dec. 1

Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services (DSS) will once again be participating in the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP), a federally funded program that provides for a one-time vendor payment to help eligible households pay their heating bills.

During the month of December, DSS will be accepting LIEAP applications from individuals with disabilities who receive services through the Division of Aging and Adult Services or households in which a member of the household is age 60 or older. Individuals will be able to apply at either of our DSS locations: Kuralt Center, 301 Billingsley Road; and Charlotte or Chapin Hall, 3205 Freedom Drive, Charlotte.

Applications for all other households will be taken from Jan. 1 through March 31, 2017.

For more information, contact DSS Division Director Darrell Cunningham at 980-314-6467 or Darrell.Cunningham@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov

Learn to Ride adds More Cyclists to Charlotte

More than one hundred kids and adults are among Charlotte’s newest cyclists thanks to a Learn to Ride event at Marion Diehl Recreation Center earlier this month.

The Nov. 5 event capped a year of five Learn to Ride opportunities that helped more than 500 riders in our area become confident bike riders.

Mecklenburg County serves as a partner in the program that teaches this valuable life skill, and stresses the importance of teamwork and self-confidence.
Organizers are looking at locations now for a January event.

For more information about Learn to Ride, visit www.learntorideclt.com or contact Dick Winters, Mecklenburg County Public Health Department, at 980-314-9067 or Dick.Winters@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov.

Happy Thanksgiving

The next Board Bulletin will be sent on Monday, Dec. 5, 2016.
Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
