New Compost Central Facility Design Ready for Public Review
Mecklenburg County will be hosting a Community Information Meeting on Oct. 23 to present the design of the new County Compost and Recycling Facility. Residents are invited to attend the meeting located near the intersection of Rozzelles Ferry Road and Valley Dale Road.

The County held an initial project community meeting in September 2013. During that meeting, a commitment was made to return to the community for feedback when detailed designs were available.

To learn more about the new facility, plan to attend between 5 – 7:00 p.m. at Assurance United Methodist Church, 6729 Old Mount Holly Road, Charlotte NC, 28214. Please contact Solid Waste Director Jeffrey Smithberger if you have questions.

Volunteers Needed to Help Construct Newtown Memorial Playground

Remembering the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy is the theme of a new Park and Recreation playground that’s looking for a few good volunteers.

The facility at Park Road Park will honor the lives lost in Newtown, CT, in 2012.

The playground will be built during shifts the week of Oct. 27, and requires the assistance of hundreds of volunteers at all skill levels.

Shifts will require at least 200 people each and are scheduled for the following time slots:
  • Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon
  • Monday-Thursday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m
  • Friday from 8 a.m. until noon

Lunch will be provided between the morning and afternoon shifts.

To volunteer, or for more information, contact Lori Saylor at  980-314-1045 or via email

Commissioner Dunlap Completes Advanced Leadership Corps Training

One of Mecklenburg County’s longest serving public officials has completed a new leadership course.

Mecklenburg County Commissioner George Dunlap completed the Advanced Leadership Corps (ALC) training class offered by the School of Government at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. The course is offered in conjunction with the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners and the North Carolina League of Municipalities.
ALC is a weeklong, residential program designed to help municipal and county elected officials understand the broader challenges of governing, build personal leadership abilities, and learn how to lead and act collaboratively.

The program, funded in part by Prudential Retirement, is in its second year and has trained 36 municipal and county elected officials from across the state.

The leadership skills developed through ALC are designed to encourage commissioners to become better leaders in their home counties, promote more engagement in the work of the Association, and inspire participants to seek higher public offices.
