Joint Meeting on Human Services Plan
On June 30, four members of the Board (Jennifer Roberts, Harold Cogdell, Dan Murrey and Vilma Leake) attended a community dialogue meeting at Little Rock AME Zion Church. The meeting was organized by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community Relations Committee, Community Building Initiative, and Mecklenburg Ministries to discuss the topic of meeting basic human needs in difficult economic times. This was the most recent of several meetings these organizations have sponsored since early 2008 to raise awareness and engage residents in discussions about community matters.
The meeting drew more than 200 people, which filled the room beyond its seating capacity. In addition to hearing from a panel, the participants broke up into small groups to develop questions and ideas. One of the ideas that emerged was the desire to have a strategic community plan for human services. Although we have various plans that deal with specific issues in the human services area (e.g., Plan to End Homelessness), we do not have a comprehensive human services plan. A quick scan of web sites reveals other communities have created such plans that establish community priorities, goals and strategies for capital and operational investment in addressing human service needs.
As a result of the strong interest in this idea, as expressed by the meeting participants, members of the Board have placed this item on the agenda for a July 7 joint meeting of two Board committees (Health and Community Support Services; and Natural Resources). In addition, Chairman Roberts is writing today to members of the Charlotte City Council, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Board of Education and mayors of the Mecklenburg municipalities to invite them to this meeting. The purpose of this invitation is to provide an opportunity for elected officials to discuss this idea of a strategic community plan for human services, and potential next steps in designing a process for this plan.
This is not the only item on this agenda, so the intent is to discuss this item from 4:30 – 5 p.m. (the Board’s regular dinner meeting begins at 5 p.m.). The joint committee meeting will be held in room Ch-14 of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center.
