If you’re new to North Carolina and still driving around with an
out-of-state license plate, you may be in violation of the law.
The North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) says you must get a North Carolina license plate within 30 days, and a North Carolina driver’s license within 60 days, or as soon as you get a job.
The DMV provides ownership lists to the county in which the vehicle or trailer is registered. The owner of the vehicle or trailer must pay the initial tax bill before registration can be renewed in the following year. The cost of the license plate and the annual tax – which is based on the value of your car – helps maintain our roads.
Cars, trucks, motorcycles, and trailers, are all subject to registration fees and an annual tax levied by Mecklenburg County. Those who fail to register their vehicles and fulfill their tax obligations could find themselves facing fines and court costs, in addition to the regular fees.
If you have questions, call CharMeck 311 by dialing 311 within Mecklenburg County limits, or 704-336-7600 outside of Mecklenburg County or the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.
