Water Conservation Tips

North Carolina has just experienced one of the hottest and driest summers on record. Our current weather conditions as well as years of depleting rainfall have put our state in drought conditions, making water conservation necessary for private residences and businesses alike. The following water saving tips can be used by restaurant operators, pool operators, and private homeowners.

Tips for Commercial Kitchen Operators

  • Avoid using kitchen sink disposals (use garbage can)
  • Only run a full load of dishes or equipment when using a dish machine
  • Defrost food in a refrigerator or in a microwave instead of under cool, running water
  • Check all fixtures for leaks and repair when necessary
  • Install water conserving fixtures and components (i.e. high efficiency faucet aerators)
  • Use single service eating and drinking utensils
  • Buy ice from commercial ice plants
  • Serve water only upon request
  • Purchase drinking water from water bottling plants
  • Limit drink refills
  • Obtain beverages in ready-to-use forms (boxed tea, canned soft drinks, etc.)
  • Purchase pre-washed produce or use frozen or canned
  • Send laundry to a commercial cleaners
  • Turn off dipper wells and store scoops in the product or on a clean surface
  • Limit flood-type cleaning of floors; use mop and bucket method
  • Double bag garbage so bags do not break in cans or dumpster
  • Sweep and scrape parking lots or use a blower instead of hosing with water

Tips for Swimming Pool Operators

 

  • Repair pool if leaks are detected
  • Cover pool when not in use to reduce evaporation
  • Turn down temperature of heated pool to reduce evaporation
  • Exercise more efficient backwash and lengthen time between each backwash
  • Replace filter with cartridge filter if possible
  • Be observant of water level to prevent overflow
  • Reset automatic fill to prevent overflow
  • Use mop and bucket method of cleaning for restroom facilities instead of hosing
