About Environmental Health Specialists

The Environmental Health Specialist must be a Registered Sanitarian (RS) in order to be employed in North Carolina. The requirements for registration are found in NCGS 90A-53 and specify that the employee must:

  • be of good moral character
  • have graduated with a baccalaureate degree from a post-secondary educational institution rated as acceptable by the North Carolina State Board of Sanitarian Examiners. A minimum of 30 semester hours of credits must have been earned in the sciences (e.g. biology, chemistry, physics, geology)
  • successfully complete an 8 week training course provided in Raleigh. (Mecklenburg County requires this course be completed at the first offering after hire.)
  • pass an examination designed to test for competence in the subject matters of environmental health sanitation after two years experience in the field, and prior to the completion of three years of service.

The cost of the RS exam is currently $125.00 and is payable by the employee. Annual renewal of R.S. credentials (or RS Intern status prior to completion of the RS requirements) is currently $35.00 which is also payable by the employee.

Once these registration requirements have been met, the Environmental Health Specialist must obtain 15 clock hours of continuing education each year. The cost for this training is generally paid by the Department.

Due to the registration and authorization requirements, preference is generally given to individuals who have previously completed Centralized Training, who are currently registered with the North Carolina State Board of Sanitarian Examiners, and who currently have state authorizations in food and lodging sanitation and day care evaluation.
