The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office Canine Unit is comprised of six Deputy Sheriff's and six dogs. Our dogs consist of German Shepherds, and one bloodhound.  The dogs are utilized for tracking, apprehension, locating evidence, building and/or area searches, narcotic detection, explosive detection and search and rescue.

The Canine Unit's primary responsibilities are narcotic searches in the four Mecklenburg County Jails, the apprehension of criminal offenders, and weapon and/or narcotic searches of Charlotte-Mecklenburg school facilities.  The Canine Unit is also available to assist other law enforcement agencies upon request.

The Canine Unit serves as a link between the Sheriff's Office and the community through demonstrations, exhibitions and special events. To schedule a Canine demonstration for your organization, please call  704-336-8394.
