MultiPurpose CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Mecklenburg County government has something in common with Mecklenburg students this year: a report card. For the first time, the annual State of the County Report includes a performance scorecard to let residents know how their County Government rates in the County’s four focus areas that affect quality of life:
Community Health & Safety
Effective & Efficient Government
Social Education & Economic Opportunity
Growth Management & Environment
Instead of traditional grades, the County uses the symbol of the traffic light to communicate performance in achieving desired results. A red light is reason for concern; a yellow light indicates a mixed performance; a green light indicates positive performance. The County also is using an “under construction” symbol this year to indicate when a full-year’s worth of data has yet to be collected to reveal performance. For example, the County achieved a green light for financial stability and organizational integrity. Mecklenburg County consistently receives a Triple-A bond rating- the highest rating available – from three nationally recognized bond-rating agencies.
In the report, residents will find out what the County has accomplished during the past fiscal year, and the results sought in the future. Residents also can read about the County’s most notable accomplishments of the past fiscal year, including the launch of a regional Homeland Security Office and the national attention garnered by the Work First program, which has helped more than 12,000 local welfare recipients find work since 1997.
The 2002 State of the County Report report will be published as a special insert in The Charlotte Observer on September 29.
