AWARDS HIGHLIGHT OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT BY MECKLENBURG COUNTY PROGRAMS
Charlotte, NC - Two recent awards, one national and one statewide, demonstrate the commitment to excellence by the Mecklenburg County DWI Treatment Court Program and Geographic Information Services (GIS).
· Mecklenburg County DWI Treatment Court Program has been awarded the National Commission Against Drunk Driving (NCADD) 2002 Annual National Award for outstanding achievement in the fight against drunk driving in the adjudication category.
The DWI Court Program is a court-supervised, intensive treatment program for DWI offenders who have been identified as having a substance abuse problem. "We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our DWI Treatment Court and all of our other Alternatives to Incarceration programs," says Peter Cook, director of Mecklenburg County Court Services.
· Mecklenburg County Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has been awarded a North Carolina Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (NC URISA) 2002 Excellence in GIS Award. Tammy Dixon won the award for Outstanding GIS Manager.
GIS creates Internet applications that give citizens and employees access to information on land values and development, school assignments, flood zones and a multitude of other data. With the click of a mouse, residents can find out about high-crime areas, where to vote or find the nearest library or park.
