PARKING DECK TO CLOSE IN PREPARATION FOR NEW MECKLENBURG COUNTY COURTHOUSE
Charlotte, NC – Beginning Monday, January 6, 2003, the parking deck that serves the current Mecklenburg County courts complex will be closed in preparation for demolition. The parking deck is located on the west side of McDowell Street, between 3rd and 4th streets. The site of the deck will become home to the new Mecklenburg County courthouse. Any vehicles remaining in the parking deck at 6 p.m. Friday, January 3, will be towed at the owner's expense.
Alternate parking for jurors will be available at the Adams Mark Hotel (555 South McDowell Street). Alternate parking for court employees will be at the Adams Mark Hotel and the Four Points Sheraton Hotel (201 South McDowell Street). Other court visitors are asked to utilize alternate parking in a wide variety of lots, parking decks, and on-street spaces throughout the Government District.
Demolition of the parking deck is expected to begin the week of January 13, and construction on the new courthouse will begin in spring of 2003. Throughout the month of January, a scale model of the new courthouse will be on display in the lobby of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center at 600 East Fourth Street. In February, the model will be on display in the current Mecklenburg County courthouse at 800 East Fourth Street.
Mecklenburg County Real Estate Services and construction manager F.N. Thompson/Turner Construction/Walter B. Davis will manage the courthouse construction project jointly. Design and planning is being conducted by SchenkelShultz/HDR/Kallman McKinnell & Wood, with input from the various agencies that will utilize the new courthouse and Judicial Center.
