The Flood Alert System sends out an automated notification when heavy rains swell our creeks to the point that they're ready to overflow their banks and possibily threaten people or private property.

This unit is placed along the creek at the entrance to Carolinas Medical Center near Uptown Charlotte

The Charlotte Fire Department, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, Storm Water Services, Emergency Management, MEDIC and Department of Transportation recently took part in a mock exercise to test their response to the Flood Alert System.

The system sends pages and fax messages to each of the emergency responders. The departments coordinate the level of response based on the numbers of alerts that are issued for each incident.

The next phase of the project will connect Flood Alert System with homeowners along the creek so they are contacted directly about a possible flooding threat.
