RE-DESIGNED INFORMATION AND REFERRAL WEB SITE WILL BETTER SERVE SPANISH SPEAKERS

Charlotte, NC – The newly re-translated, re-designed and re-written Web site for Just1Call should offer users smooth navigation to help its visitors obtain information on services for seniors, adults with disabilities, their families and caregivers.

The innovative, award-winning program -- a service of Mecklenburg County -- was launched in September 2000.  Since then Just1Call has helped nearly 20,000 callers and 27,000 Web visitors connect with a variety of services, including transportation and housing, health care services and products, financial aid, social activities and legal services.  Just1Call has made more than 47,000 referrals to some 800 different service providers in the public and private sectors.

Telephone calls to Just1Call have increased 55 percent, and visits to the J1C Web site increased 37 percent for the first six months of 2002 versus the same period in 2001.

Just1Call’s highly trained social workers thoroughly assess customer needs, identify resources and offer assistance and advocacy in connecting their customers with a wide variety of resources.

"In addition to seniors, adults with disabilities, their families and caregivers, providers and businesses also benefit from Just1Call,'' said Alan Geltman, program coordinator. "J1C has streamlined the provider's process of "intaking" clients by better preparing all the involved parties for that process."

Geltman said the program plans to focus more resources this year on outreach to providers and businesses throughout Mecklenburg County, partnering with the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and the international and multi-cultural communities.

Geltman said he estimates about 40 calls per month from persons who speak languages other than English. The majority of those calls are from people who speak Spanish, but the program has also received calls in Vietnamese, Arabic, Chinese, French, German and Russian.  Translation services in 140 languages are immediately available.

Laptop computers mean the full range of J1C services can be provided off-site in such areas as senior centers, the public library, community centers and public housing residences for seniors.
