COORDINATOR WINS STATE HONOR FOR WORK WITH INFORMATION AND REFERRAL PROGRAM

CHARLOTTE, NC -- A state association awarded Alan Geltman, coordinator of the Just1Call (J1C) program for seniors, adults with disabilities and their families, its top honor for an individual who works in the information and referral services area.

Geltman, a Mecklenburg County employee for 28 years, is the recipient of the 2003 Mary C. Ledbetter Information & Referral Individual of the Year Award. The North Carolina Alliance of Information & Referral Systems (NC AIRS) plans to present Geltman the award on May 9, 2003, during its annual conference in Charlotte.

"I fully credit the staff of Just1Call for all its success," Geltman said, and added that he is proud to receive the award.

The Ledbetter Award, established in 2000, is named for longtime board member and North Carolina's "Grandmother" of information and referral (I&R), Mary C. Ledbetter. The award is given to an individual who has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to advancing the field of information and referral in North Carolina.

Geltman is responsible for the planning, development and implementation of J1C. Just1Call is a no-cost, one-step method of accessing information on services for senior citizens, adults with disabilities and their caregivers in Mecklenburg County. NC AIRS officials say that Just1Call is a demonstration of an exceptional I&R service that is responsive to its consumers needs.

J1C began operation on September 6, 2000. Under Geltman's direction, Just1Call received the National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Award and was recognized by North Carolina Institute of Medicine's Long Term Care Taskforce as a Best Practice Local Initiative for Information and Assistance. Just1Call has received the Charlotte Chamber's Blue Diamond Award for technology innovation in the category of Large Corporations. Also, the North Carolina Electronics and Information Technologies Association (NCEITA) awarded the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services run program with a technology honor for Top Government/Not-for-Profit Technology of the Year

Geltman also co-authored an article in the Duke Long Term Care Resources Program Occasional Paper Series: "Developing Access Services in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina: THE JUST1CALL EXPERIENCE."
