TAX COLLECTOR TO MAIL FINAL ROUND OF
REAL ESTATE AND PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX BILLS
Charlotte, NC - The Mecklenburg County Tax Collector is preparing to mail the final round of real estate and personal property tax bills before the January 5, 2004, payment deadline. That is when interest begins to accrue on unpaid taxes. The last billing before the interest deadline will occur during the week of December 8. Taxpayers who do not receive a bill by mid-December should consider prepaying their tax to avoid interest.
Many of the late tax bills are a result of unresolved property value appeals. North Carolina statute does not allow the tax collector to send a tax bill if the tax value of the property is under appeal. State law also requires the tax collector to charge interest on any bill paid after January 5, 2004, regardless of the reason.
All delinquent taxes are subject to an interest charge of 2 percent for the first month of delinquency and 0.75 percent for each additional month until paid. Delinquent taxes are also subject to collection action including garnishment, seizure and foreclosure.
Prepaying your tax: Any taxpayer who has not received a 2003 tax bill by mid-December should consider prepaying the tax to avoid delinquency. Letters were mailed to affected taxpayers indicating the amount of tax due based on the current assessed value that is under appeal. If the taxpayer prepays the amount on the letter and has a value reduction at a later date, the taxpayer will receive a refund. If the taxpayer pays an amount less than the amount on the letter, the taxpayer will receive a refund or a bill for the balance due, plus interest.
