Demolition starts today at the Courthouse Parking Deck at the Corner of 4th and McDowell Streets.
Mecklenburg County Real Estate Services has hired D.H. Griffin Wrecking Company to demolish the parking deck. Demolition is expected to take 6 - 8 weeks, with construction commencing in the spring on the new Mecklenburg County courthouse.
The new Mecklenburg County courthouse will be 568,000 square feet, eight stories high, and consist of 39 courtrooms. A new parking deck accommodating 1,000 vehicles will be constructed across McDowell Street. The current deck accommodates 400 vehicles. A scale model of the new courthouse is on display in the current Mecklenburg County courthouse at 800 East Fourth Street.
