Charlotte, NC - Several individuals and businesses will be honored August 26, 2003, during the annual Women's Equality Day Awards Program at the Adam's Mark Hotel in uptown Charlotte.

The Mecklenburg County Women's Commission and several local individuals and women's organizations sponsor the awards program, which recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the lives of women and families.  Awards are presented in four specific categories. The nominees are:

The Elisabeth G. Hair Women's Equality Day Award: Jeanne M. Brayboy, Patricia G. Garrett and Debra Howze:  This award recognizes professionalism and excellence in performance that has significantly impacted the lives of women and families with wide and far?reaching effects.

The Virginia Shadd Community Service Award: Abbie Butler, Olma Echeverri, Fran Farrer-Nash, Paulene Gibson, Carol Hughes, Mary T. Klenz, Mary Butler Maxwell, Mary Elizabeth Murphy, Dee Sumpter: This award recognizes an individual who has worked at the grassroots level and made significant contributions on behalf of women, children and/or families in the Charlotte?Mecklenburg community through much energy, enthusiasm and commitment.

The Business Award: House of Grace: This award recognizes the business that has demonstrated excellence in its accomplishments/achievements toward implementing policies supporting women, children, and/or families.  The business may be a corporation, a non?profit or an unincorporated business.  Nominations for this category will be accepted only from members of The Women's Equality Day Planning Committee.

The Women's Equality Day Youth Award: Everett B. Allen, Erin Nicole Barksdale, Jennifer Rodriguez: This award recognizes a youth or a group of young people (ages 8 to 18) who have exemplified excellence in civic, social, community services and/or in scholastic achievement.

The Women's Equality Day Program is at noon Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at the Adams Mark Hotel 555 South McDowell St., Charlotte, NC.  Tickets are $30. To register call the Mecklenburg County Women's Commission at 704-336-3210.
