NUMBER TWO AND TRYING HARDER

Charlotte, NC - On the heels of being named the second best local web site in America, CharMeck.org has launched a faster, easier way to access City and County services online.

eServices.CharMeck.org will take customers directly to a complete list of all City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County services and forms that can be submitted or downloaded online. Services are divided into ten logical categories that are reinforced with graphical icons for even easier selection. "eServices.CharMeck.org is a direct response to City and County customers who tell us they want to conduct business with government without the hassle of coming downtown," says Brian Cox, Customer Service & eGovernment Manager.

"Our customers want services in the most convenient and effective way," says Charlotte's Julie Hill, co-chair of the City-County Internet Management Committee. "With eServices.CharMeck.org, they can do everything from paying a parking ticket to reporting a barking dog at one location."

CharMeck.org is the joint government web site of the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, a unique arrangement among government bodies. It was launched in October of 2002 and has already seen a 50% increase in visits compared with the previous site.

"Our GIS (Geographic Information System) Department has been creating interactive applications for years," Cox says, "but we did a poor job of grouping them together and packaging them as a single product until now." One of those GIS-powered applications is "Polaris," which allows people to look up a home or piece of property online and get all the data and photographs available relating to that property. Polaris is visited more than six-million times a month.

CharMeck.org was named second-best local government web site among the nation's 70 largest cities by Brown University's Taubman Center for Public Policy. Only Denver, Colorado scored higher. The annual survey of local, state and federal web sites recognizes the most effective use of the web to provide information and services to the public.
