CELEBRATION OF THE GAMES: PARADE AND CEREMONY WILL KICK OFF SENIOR GAMES
Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Senior Games will kick off April 23 with a Celebration of the Games, which includes a parade and ceremony.
The Celebration of the Games will be Wednesday, April 23, 2003, in the infield of Lowe's Motor Speedway. The celebration will begin with a parade of athletes and artists at 5:30 p.m., followed by the opening ceremony. The ceremony will feature Humpy Wheeler, president and general manager of Lowe's Motor Speedway. Mr. Wheeler will also participate in the first event, a cycling competition to be held at the speedway following the celebration.
The event is free and open to the public. All participants and spectators will be asked to sign a waiver to enter the LMS infield, so allow extra time. The celebration will include participants from Mecklenburg, Gaston, Lincoln, Cabarrus and Union Counties. The games will take place April 23 - May 9, featuring seniors age 55 or better. Athletes participate in a wide variety of athletic events, or in one of many visual, heritage, literary, and performing arts.
The Senior Games are held at Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation facilities, UNC Charlotte and other locations. Medal winners will be invited to participate in the Senior Games State Finals held in Raleigh in the fall. Medal winners in the State Finals are invited to the National Games, held at various locations around the nation.
