Tax Delinquents

Charlotte, NC - Approximately 21,000 Mecklenburg County property owners have not yet paid their 2003 real and personal property tax bills. Those owners will have their names published in The Charlotte Observer on Sunday, May 16, 2004. New this year, the names of delinquent property owners in Huntersville will also be published in the Huntersville Herald in this week's edition.

Each tax bill published will be charged an additional fee for the cost of the advertisement. The advertisement charges are in addition to interest charged for late payment. Any 2003 tax bill paid after January 5, 2004, is charged 2 percent interest for the month of January and .75 percent interest for each month thereafter until the bill is paid.

The list reflects unpaid accounts as of April 30, 2004. Taxpayers were sent at least two delinquent notices before being advertised. Many received other collection letters, telephone calls, and field visits before the advertisement was created.

The amounts listed in the advertisement do not include interest. Taxpayers can find the full amount due by calling or using the Tax Bill Look-up application on the Web site http://tax.charmeck.org.

There are several ways to pay your tax bill:

· By Internet: Log on to http://paytax.charmeck.org and use a credit/debit card.*

· By phone: Call 1-877-533-0072 and use a credit/debit card.*

· By mail: Mail a check using the return envelope in your tax bill.

· In person: Pay at the Tax Collector's office at the Robert L. "Bob" Walton Plaza, 700 East Stonewall Street in Charlotte, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Make check payable to the Mecklenburg County Tax Collector.

*There is a convenience fee assessed when using the credit/debit card option. Credit/debit cards are not accepted at the Tax Collector's office.

Taxpayers with questions about their bill, property listings, or real estate valuations can call Tax Support Services at 704-336-4600 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
