Charlotte, NC - (May 12, 2005) Mecklenburg County Manager Harry Jones is preparing to present his recommended budget for FY2005 - 2006 to the Board of County Commissioners at its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 17. The recommendation will take into account the many choices and consequences associated with the lack of revenue and the mounting cost for services.
Two public hearings are scheduled for May 19 and May 26 to give Mecklenburg County residents the opportunity to address the Board. The first hearing is dedicated to comments on funding for County services. The second is dedicated to comments on education funding (CMS and CPCC). Residents can register

or call 704-432-0645. Your commissioners will then participate in a series of workshops to develop a final budget for adoption on June 21.
The County Manager's recommended budget is being developed by following principles endorsed by the Board of County Commissioners and the County's "Managing for Results" philosophy - funding priorities and services that achieve results. The recommended budget considers the fact that new revenue (i.e. growth) will not cover the increased cost of debt, Medicaid, and core services the County is mandated or expected to provide. As a result, the County cannot continue the current level of service without additional revenue. The County Manager has informed the Board that he will request an increase in the tax rate.
