Charlotte, NC - August 4, 2005 - The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners has removed the word "interim" from Health Director Dr. Wynn Mabry's title. Last night, the Board approved hiring Mabry as full-time director of the Mecklenburg County Health Department.
Mabry was selected following a six-month nationwide search by County Manager Harry L. Jones Sr. and the Board.
Dr. Mabry, a retired Major General in the United States Air Force, has been Interim Health Director since September 2004. He was first hired in 2002 as Director of the Mecklenburg County Office of Homeland Security, a position he will continue to hold.
"I am excited to continue to be a part of a highly professional and gifted team that is dedicated to protecting the community's health and safety," said Dr. Mabry.
Mabry's responsibilities include overseeing public response to infectious disease, environmental health and public health education.
During his 30-year Air Force career, Dr. Mabry served as a senior flight surgeon, a surgical specialist at major USAF Medical Centers, and as a Commander of five military hospitals and medical centers. He received a Medical Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma, and surgical specialty training from Duke University Medical Center.
