The amount of yard waste accepted at Mecklenburg County's composting and yard waste facilities is up 50%.

The amount of leaves, limbs and other yard waste accepted at Mecklenburg County's composting and yard waste facilities is up 50 percent over last year.

During November, the County's four yard waste centers accepted 11,050 tons of yard waste. That's up from 7,400 tons during the same period in 2005, a 50-percent increase.

Meckenburg County's composting and yard waste facilities accept yard waste collected by the City of Charlotte, private contractors, and homeowners anywhere in Mecklenburg County.

Once accepted at a yard waste center, leaves and limbs are ground into high-quality mulch or compost and offered for sale. Prices range from $4 per bag, or $3.50 – $26 per cubic yard, depending on the type and amount. Mecklenburg County residents can call Compost Central at 704-588-9070 to arrange for delivery of mulch or compost. The cost for delivery is $45, plus the purchase price of the compost or mulch.
