MECKLENBURG COUNTY AND FAITH COMMUNITY COLLECT  CELL PHONES FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS

Charlotte, NC - The Mecklenburg County Women’s Commission and the Domestic Violence Advocacy Council’s Interfaith Committee are partnering with area churches, synagogues and other houses of worship and to collect used cell phones for domestic violence victims.

Cell Phone

A cell phone can be programmed to call 911, regardless of whether or not the user has purchased a service plan.  Providing cell phones to domestic violence victims, or potential victims, allows them to call 911 in case of emergency. Some of the donated phones will go to other domestic violence agencies, such as the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's domestic violence unit, the Shelter for Battered Women, and Victim Assistance.  All of these programs are in need of phones to give to domestic violence victims for use in emergency situations.

Those who wish to donate a phone can drop it off at one of the following locations (see next page) or mail them to:

”This is an opportunity to reach out to houses of worship, letting them know we are here to help them set up domestic violence ministries or simply be a resource for them when dealing with domestic violence issues,” says Mike Sexton with the Women’s Commission and Chair of the DVAC’s Public Awareness subcommittee.

For more information on the effects of domestic violence in our community, call the Mecklenburg County Women's Commission at 704-336-3210 or the Shelter for Battered Women at 704-332-2513. More information is also available at the Women's Commission's page at www.charmeck.org, available through "Departments."
