Charlotte, NC – Some Mecklenburg County automobile owners recently received their annual vehicle tax bills. However, due to a technical error, some of the bills originally mailed out July 15, 2006 have incorrect information concerning the date when interest accrual begins.
 
All the bills should show that payment is due upon receipt, with interest accrual starting on Sept. 1, 2006. But of the more than 54,000 vehicle tax bills sent out earlier this month, about 20,000 of them show either an October or November due date, or a random string of characters.

The Office of the Tax Collector will soon send a letter to all affected Mecklenburg County automobile owners to alert them to the possible error, and to remind them that vehicle tax bills must be paid by August 31, 2006, to avoid interest accrual.
 
The Tax Office apologizes for the error, and is working to ensure that it is corrected. Vehicle owners are asked to please call 311 with any questions.
