AIR, LAND AND WATER: 2006 STATE OF THE ENVIRONMENT REPORT HAS THEME "NEW EXPECATIONS"
Charlotte, NC – The “2006 State of the Environment Report” for Mecklenburg County is now available, with a theme this year of "New Expectations."
The report is a benchmark for describing environmental conditions in Mecklenburg County and answers questions about the County’s air, land and water. It is being distributed to the Board of County Commissioners, other elected officials, libraries, schools, environmental advocacy groups, and others.
Mecklenburg County has produced the “State of the Environment Report” every two years since 1987. Its goal is to:
• Summarize Mecklenburg County's current environmental status for the public and the Board of County Commissioners.
• Give the County objective measures to evaluate progress toward a clean, healthy environment.
• Highlight the major issues facing the County.
• Provide a historical record of many programs and projects operating within the County.
A 2005 survey shows that 77 percent of respondents believe that protecting the environment is important to the overall quality of life in Mecklenburg County. The facts are evident, good and bad: residents of the region continue to breathe unhealthy air in the summer; surface water conditions have improved dramatically, but there is still work to be done in light of continued development; commercial recycling and waste reduction programs are reducing the amount of waste going to the landfill; open space continues to dwindle, but Mecklenburg County is making strides to preserve green space and natural habitat.
The Mecklenburg County Land Use and Environmental Services Agency (LUESA) issues the State of the Environment Report as a mechanism for communicating these conditions and trends, as well as stimulating thoughts and inviting solutions. It is just over 100 pages and divided into sections focusing on the conditions of the County’s air, land and water.
