MECKLENBURG COUNTY MANAGER HARRY JONES ELECTED TO UNC-CHAPEL HILL BOARD OF VISITORS
Charlotte, NC – Mecklenburg County Manager Harry L. Jones Sr. has been elected to the Board of Visitors at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was elected by the University's Board of Trustees to serve from 2006 - 2010.
The Board of Visitors at UNC-Chapel Hill is a group of volunteers, assisting the Board of Trustees and Chancellor James Moeser in a range of activities to help advance the University. The Board of Visitors is composed of 160 elected members - four classes, each serving four-year terms. Members serve as ambassadors to their communities, assisting with public relations, government relations and fundraising.
"This is quite an honor for a man who is a Tar Heel through and through," said Jones. "This is an exciting time for Carolina and the entire UNC system. I'm delighted to assist the Board of Trustees and Chancellor Moeser in promoting the University's goals."
Mr. Jones is a native of Southern Pines, NC and a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, holding a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Public Administration. While a student at UNC-Chapel Hill, Jones was inducted into the Order of the Golden Fleece (the University’s highest honorary society), the Order of the Grail and the Society of Janus. He was employed as a student assistant to the dean of student affairs, serving as a liaison to minority students.
Mr. Jones has worked in public service for more than 30 years, serving as Mecklenburg County Manager since 2000 and previously as Assistant County Manager beginning in 1991.
Before joining Mecklenburg County, Mr. Jones worked for the City of Dallas, TX, in the posts of housing compliance director, assistant city manager, director of court services and director of housing and neighborhood services. He also served as community development director for the City of Charlotte, executive director of the Fayetteville Housing Authority and assistant director of operations and program analyst for the Raleigh Housing Authority.
