Expanding Emergency Psychiatric Care
Mecklenburg County and Carolinas HealthCare System will break ground this week for an expansion to their Psychiatric Emergency Department on Randolph Road.

Mecklenburg County and Carolinas HealthCare System will host a special groundbreaking event to mark the expansion of the Psychiatric Emergency Department at CMC-Randolph on Thursday, April 19.

Mecklenburg County and Carolinas HealthCare System announce the expansion of the Psychiatric Emergency Department which is managed by Carolinas HealthCare System's Behavioral Health Center CMC-Randolph. Senior officials from Mecklenburg County and Carolinas HealthCare System will celebrate the new venture with a special groundbreaking ceremony on April 19 at 10 a.m. on CMC-Randolph's front lawn, 501 Billingsley Road, Charlotte.

As the only dedicated Psychiatric Emergency Department in the region, this expansion will provide more space and help manage the recent increase in consumers and complex patient needs in Mecklenburg County. This is the first expansion of the CMC – Randolph building since 1976. The overall scope of the project is to construct an additional 12,856 square feet of direct and indirect treatment space, add an additional 67 new parking spaces, and purchase an emergency generator. Once completed, the new Psychiatric Emergency Department will have separate areas for adult and child/adolescent patients.

The $6.3 million dollar Mecklenburg County-funded project is expected to be completed and open to the public by late September 2008.

The groundbreaking theme is "Building For Our Future." The Area Mental Health Authority manages the public mental health system in Mecklenburg County which includes screening, assessing, and referring consumers to appropriate providers in the community. For help and information, the public can contact the Area Mental Health Authority's call center at 704-336-6404 or by visiting the AMH web site.

Behavioral Health Center CMC-Randolph has been providing quality behavioral health services since the mid-1940's at Carolinas Medical Center (CMC).
