The Mecklenburg County featuring photographs of local children in foster care waiting to be adopted, opens August 11 with a special reception. More than 50 professionally produced portraits of adoptable children will be unveiled.

- Saturday, August 11
- 6 p.m.
- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center
- 600 East Fourth Street, Charlotte

The exhibit is free to the public and will remain at the Government Center until September 7.

To celebrate the opening of this exhibit, Gift for a Child/Heart Gallery Southeast and the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services will host an exhibit and reception. Foster care alumnus and Nashville songwriter/producer Jimmy Wayne will be the featured entertainer for the evening. Individuals interested in adoption, local businesses, photographers, faith-based leaders and adoption advocates are expected to attend the event that will include an evening of food, entertainment and enlightenment about children impacted by foster care.

The Heart Gallery is a nationally recognized program and was created to raise interest and awareness about children in need of an adoptive family and is based on a simple idea – volunteer professional photographers take compelling pictures of the children, and the results are exhibited in a gallery format so that potential adoptive families can see more than a profile – they can see a budding personality. Brief biographies of the children are featured with the portraits. This program has been replicated across the United States and has proven to be one of the more successful vehicles used to bring awareness to the issue and find permanency for waiting children.

The Mecklenburg County Heart Gallery is sponsored by WSOC-TV, WAXN, Gift for a Child/Heart Gallery Southeast, NOVA Information Systems, Kenny Color Laboratory, Cuisine Dreams and the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services. The following professional photographers from Charlotte volunteered their time and talent to create the portraits of children: Greg Briley, Kelli Brinkley, Kimberly Cash, Charlie Cowins, Paula Fuller, Todd Hess, Michael Honeycutt, Krystin Jacobs, Angus Lamond, Denise Smith, Maddy St. Clair and Wayne St. John.
