Forty-five inspection stations have volunteered to partner with Mecklenburg County Air Quality to test and replace leaking vehicle gas caps - free of charge.
Leaking gas caps can waste fuel and contribute to air pollution. Mecklenburg County received funding from the N.C. Department of Transportation for a gas cap replacement program. Forty-five inspection stations - fifteen each quarter through the end of September - will test gas caps when performing annual inspections and will also test caps of vehicles upon request. Any vehicles that fail the check will be provided a new gas cap on the spot at no cost to the vehicle owner.
