Veterans Services Office and American Legion Post 380 will host a ceremony at 11 a.m. Also, Mecklenburg County government offices and agencies will be closed.

May 21, 2007

The Mecklenburg County Veterans Services Office and American Legion Post 380 will host a ceremony to honor soldiers who have died while serving our nation.
- Monday, May 28
- 11 a.m.
- F orest Lawn Cemetery - West
- 4601 Freedom Drive, Charlotte

A salute and a special tribute to veterans will be part of the ceremony.

Formally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day originated during the Civil War when widows and grieving family members memorialized their loved ones. Eventually, business owners joined their efforts by closing their businesses for the day and communities across the nation held parades and other observance activities in recognition of our fallen soldiers and sailors.

The Veterans Services Office is a division of Mecklenburg County Community Support Services. The office serves as a liaison for Mecklenburg County veterans and their families who seek benefits and answers from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. There are currently about 54,000 veterans living in Mecklenburg County - about 6.8 percent of the County's population and more than any other North Carolina county.
