Local church leaders are invited to a workshop, hosted by the Mecklenburg County , to learn about public assistance programs and to discuss how the faith community can assist families in need.

"Community Connections Places of Worship Information Session 2007" will take place on Thursday, October 18 at Community in Christ Lutheran Church, 7621 Norman Island Drive, Cornelius, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Lunch is free and provided by Duckworth's.

"It is our desire to make lasting connections with the faith community to better serve our customers, thereby improving the quality of life for all Mecklenburg County citizens," said Nickey Ethridge, volunteer services coordinator of DSS.

Participants who attend the workshop will learn more about how they can get involved with a number of DSS initiatives that assist customers in need such as: food and clothing pantry, holiday gifts and meals, foster care, adoption, senior nutrition, caregiver support, volunteer projects and community donation solicitation.

Expected workshop outcomes are as follows:
· Find faith community services (employment training, food, certified counseling, etc) to refer customers
· Assist the faith community in providing services to customers through training and workshops
· Create dialogue to develop a process to assess the whole individual seeking assistance, thereby initiating programs that meet several needs and avoid duplicate services

The workshop will be divided into two sessions with presentations and information from the following: Youth and Family Services, Economic Services, Services for Adults, Gang Awareness (Gang of One, Steele Creek Network & Right Moves for Youth) and Grant Writing. Other agencies in attendance to distribute information: Domestic Violence Speaker's Bureau, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, Chemical Dependency Center, Homeless Support Services, Crisis Assistance Ministry (A Way Home WISH), Health Department, Area Mental Health, and Community Support Services.
