Mitchell Honored

Charlotte, NC – Mecklenburg County Commissioner Norman A. Mitchell Sr. was named this year’s “Outstanding County Commissioner” today at the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) 101st annual conference in New Bern, NC.

Mitchell, a Democrat currently serving his fifth term representing District 2, was selected for the award for his outstanding contributions as an elected official, according to NCACC President David Young, a Buncombe County commissioner.

"During his 10 years on the Mecklenburg County Board, Norman Mitchell has gained a reputation for integrity and courage,” Young said during the award presentation. “That is why I have chosen him to win the 2008 Outstanding County Commissioner Award."

Mitchell is retired from the U.S. Postal Service and served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam, where he was wounded in combat and received the Purple Heart. He currently serves on the Homeland Security Task Force and Human Services Steering Committee of the National Association of Counties (NACo).

Founded in 1908, the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners has been recognized as one of the most successful and active statewide local government associations in the nation. The NCACC was established for the betterment of county government in North Carolina.
