The program assists Mecklenburg County residents who need help paying their winter heating bills. Residents must apply in the counties in which they reside.

Eligible households must: (1) meet an income requirement, (2) be responsible for the heating bills, (3) not have assets exceeding $2,200 and (4) include a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen. Eligible households will receive a one-time payment in February 2011 to help pay their heating costs. Some households receiving food stamps as of Sept. 30, 2010 are automatically eligible and do not need to reapply.
Applicants need to bring the following information to apply:
- October pay stubs for each employed household member
- October childcare receipts
- October unearned income (such as award letters)
- October bank statements for checking and savings accounts
- Verification of stocks, bonds, mutual funds and savings certificates
- Verification of retirement funds (e.g. IRAs, 401(k), Keogh)
- Name, date of birth and Social Security cards of each household member
- Items to verify your identity (e.g., passport, Social Security card, driver’s license)
