DSS Hours
DSS Changes Operating Hours
The Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services (DSS) will change its operating hours starting on Friday, July 1, 2011.

The current operating hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

New operating hours will be Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at both DSS locations at the Wallace H. Kuralt Centre, 301 Billingsley Road and at the Valerie C. Woodard Center, 3205 Freedom Drive both in Charlotte.

DSS offered weekend and extended hours over the past three years to meet the increased service demand brought on by the Great Recession. Budget cuts and technology limitations have reduced the department’s ability to provide all services efficiently and effectively, and resulted in additional strain on staff to meet demand during core business hours. On a positive note, increased utilization of the Customer Care Center online application processes has resulted in the department being able to offer virtually 24-hour, seven-day-a-week service in the privacy of customer’s homes or through the convenience of computers available at public sites like the Library.

“We are constantly reviewing demand data and trends in the marketplace to meet the needs of our clients and the community,” said DSS Director Mary Wilson. “DSS has experienced budgetary challenges from the federal, state and local economic conditions. We are here to meet the short-term financial needs of residents, protect children and seniors, and offer help where no one else can. To do that, we must use our limited staff and financial resources in the most prudent way possible.”

In addition to offering services at its two locations, Mecklenburg County DSS offers application mail services for Food and Nutrition Services and Medicaid through its Customer Connection call center at 704-336-3000 or through the State of North Carolina ePass service on the DSS website at
