Description1 Cornelius, NC – The SWIMMING ADVISORY has been lifted that was issued on Saturday, September 17, 2011 for a small area of Lake Norman at the end of Peninsula Point Drive in Cornelius. Lab results indicate that bacteria counts have returned to normal levels that are safe for swimming.
The SWIMMING ADVISORY was issued after approximately 985 gallons of sewage discharged to Lake Norman during the afternoon of September 17, 2011 due to a broken sewer line on Peninsula Point Drive in Cornelius. The discharge was stopped by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities shortly after being reported.
On Monday, September 19, 2011, water samples were collected from the lake by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services staff. The laboratory results of those samples indicate levels of fecal coliform bacteria at below 10 colonies per 100 milliliters. This is well below 200 colonies/100 ml, which is the level determined to be safe for swimming.
