Former Director of the Mecklenburg County Building Standards Department Ed Woods has died after a lengthy battle with cancer. Woods served as Director of the department now known as Code Enforcement for over 26 years between 1968 and 1995.
Woods had the vision for computerizing plan submission and field inspections. Electronic plan submittal and review are now the cornerstones of what Code Enforcement does, increasing efficiency and accuracy.
Woods earned his Professional Engineering registration in 1962 after earning his Civil Engineering degree from North Carolina State University.
“Ed was the prototype of a servant leader,” says Mecklenburg County General Manager Bobbie Shields. “He was a quiet visionary who always kept in mind that he was working for the public. The public is better because of his service to the County.”
A service to celebrate Ed’s life will be held at Carmel Baptist Church in Matthews on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation and a reception will follow the service in the Carmel Gathering Space.
