Get a Visual Snapshot of County Budget and Performance Data with New Online Tool
7/20/2012
A new online tool is available for anyone who wants to see Mecklenburg County budget and performance information in graphics, charts and tables that provide a visual snapshot.
The County’s Office of Management and Budget created a series of dashboards – a visual look at data presented and organized for easy access. The three main dashboards are Enterprise, Performance and Department. Here is a description of what the viewer will see for each:

  • The Enterprise Dashboard presents broad department information, countywide monthly revenue and expense activity, economic indicators and a “What if Lab” that allows the user to plug in information and explore various scenarios.
  • The Performance Dashboard tracks achievement and progress toward the goals of the Community and Corporate scorecard, and includes results that measure the success of a service or program.
  • The Department Dashboards show the individual department monthly budget and financial picture. Other information includes the most recent program review results and the Budget Evaluation Survey Tool (BEST).
“There are several reasons why I am proud of the dashboard effort and the end result,” Budget Manager and project sponsor Michael Bryant said. “However, the one that probably stands out most is the fact that the dashboards will centralize and simplify how we as an organization communicate budget and performance data to our customers and the general public. It is probably worth noting that the dashboards will promote awareness by placing the access of budget and performance data at your fingertips,” Bryant added.

The OMB dashboard project team contracted with Steve Gibson of Gibson and Associates in Rock Hill, SC. The team spent more than a year working to get the dashboards ready. The concept and the work recently won a Government Finance Officers Association’s (GFOA) Award for Excellence in the category of “Budgeting and Financial Planning.” The award is for the development of the dashboard and its potential for improving transparency in County management.
