Most of this year’s 355,000 bills were mailed on August 29. This second annual billing is a normal procedure for certain properties whose value or tax records were being processed at the time of the first annual billing. Examples include properties whose values were appealed in 2011 but the cases had not been heard by the Board of Equalization and Review, and properties changing value in 2012 as a result of new construction or other factors.
In addition, almost 12,000 notices of value are being mailed to owners to reflect either a change in their real property or its assessment effective with the 2012 tax year. These notices reflect new construction or improvements, division of real estate parcels or decisions on property classification such as homestead exclusion, agricultural use, etc.
Those who receive the new billing will notice the reverse side contains a list of frequently asked questions. Property owners who have questions not answered on the bill should contact CharMeck311 by dialing 311 within Mecklenburg, or 704-336-4600 from outside the County. Information also is found at the Tax Collector’s website: tax.charmeck.org.
These bills can be paid without interest through January 7, 2013. All bills paid on or after January 8, 2013 will be assessed interest at the rate of two percent for the first month and three-quarters percent every month thereafter until paid.
