On October 5, 2012, Mecklenburg County Solid Waste Services selected Shamrock Gardens after assessing the efforts of all CMS schools at helping to keep our environment clean.
The school was recognized for its dedicated use of single stream recycling. In addition, Shamrock was praised for the appearance of its gardens around campus that are maintained by staff and PTA.
"The assessment was a comprehensive look at each school's entire recycling program," said Trey Miller, senior Environmental Specialist for Mecklenburg County. "We looked for things like where there containers in every classroom, office, and meeting room spaces? Does the school have a team of students involved in the recycling collection? Were there posters and educational materials displayed across the school? Shamrock Gardens complied with all these questions and more."
As part of their award, Shamrock Gardens will receive a $100 Harris Teeter gift card, and will be featured in a commercial that will air on the news, the school’s website, and on the Jumbo-tron at the home games of the Charlotte Checkers at Time Warner Arena.
