The Mecklenburg County Tax Collector reminds business owners that their annual privilege license must be renewed on or before July 31, 2014 to avoid paying a penalty.

Applications were mailed June 24, 2014 to approximately 29,400 business owners in the County.

On May 29, 2014, the North Carolina General Assembly passed, and the Governor signed, a law that affects privilege license taxes in North Carolina. The Charlotte City Council and Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners both modified their respective privilege license ordinances establishing the due date as July 31.

The new privilege license legislation mandates that only businesses physically located within a city or county are subject to the tax for the 2014 – 2015 tax year. Renewal applications will not be mailed to businesses that are not located within the City of Charlotte or Mecklenburg County.

Most businesses located in Mecklenburg County are required to obtain a privilege license. That includes businesses that are home-based, sole proprietorships, partnerships, limited liability companies, corporations, and those who have full-time and part-time operations. Taxes vary depending on the type and size of the business. In most cases, the license tax is based on the amount of gross receipts from the preceding tax year. New businesses and/or businesses that have not been in business 12 months must provide their projected gross sales for the coming year. The tax rate for businesses that pay based on gross receipts is $0.60 per $1,000, with a minimum tax of $50 and a maximum tax of $10,000.

The Tax Collector urges any business operating without a license to contact the Mecklenburg County Business Tax Collections Office immediately. New privilege license accounts must be applied for in person or through the mail. Collectors are prepared to walk business owners through the process of obtaining a license. For more information:
