Neil C. Cooksey, Sr. was first elected to the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners in 2008. A Republican, he served nearly two full terms on the Board representing District 5 even as he fought a courageous battle with cancer. He died on October 10, 2012. Commissioner Cooksey was a champion for sound fiscal policy, stewardship, and transparency in government.
Born to Arthur H. and Margery Cooksey, Commissioner Cooksey bore witness to a set of core values that were a major part of who he was: care for his family and fellow man, hard work, discernment, dedication, faithfulness and service. Commissioner Cooksey graduated cum laude from Davidson College in 1983 with an A.B. degree in political science. He went on to attend the University of Michigan Law School, where he received his juris doctorate degree.
The Commissioner Neil C. Cooksey, Sr. Health Center is home to a wide variety of county medical services including adult and child immunization, WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Clinic, Adult Health Services and more.
