This first time event will bring together a mix of programmers and social entrepreneurs to develop digital applications designed to improve the day-to-day lives of Mecklenburg County residents.
The Hackathon is a free event open to anyone with an idea or an interest in contributing to tools that can better connect residents with government information and services. Whether focused on traffic, trash pickup, community events or neighborhood statistics, the possibilities are endless. Prizes, provided by event sponsors, will be awarded to the teams that develop the most innovative and useful apps.
Modeled after successful civic hackathons staged in other counties, this first competition emphasizes both creativity and agility. Teams will have two weeks to design and develop a working prototype of their digital application for a presentation to judges at GIS Day.
Going forward, the intention is that these applications will be made available for use by the public on open data sites including Open Mecklenburg and Digital Charlotte. A successful hackathon will both enhance the lives of residents and provide an introduction to the County for visitors. The hackathon is consistent with projects worldwide that provide citizens with open, transparent access to government data.
