Field to Fork 'Pizza Gardens' Unveiled for Area Schools
1/30/2014

Fuel Pizza Café of Charlotte has partnered with the Mecklenburg County Health Department, the County's Fruit & Vegetable Coalition, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and LandSculptors, LLC to bring “Field to Fork” Pizza Gardens to 15 CMS elementary classes.

The Pizza Garden concept appeals to children by helping them grow vegetables and herbs to make a healthy pizza.

The “Field to Fork Program” was started in 2010 with five elementary schools and, based on its success, the program has expanded throughout the years. This spring, the program will involve 15 elementary schools.

The 15 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools who are receiving Pizza Gardens, nutrition and cooking education, and an end-of–the-year pizza party from Fuel Pizza Café at their school are:

 Albemarle Road Elementary
 Bain Elementary
 Berryhill School
 Blythe Elementary
 Collinswood Language Academy
 Idlewild Elementary
 J.V. Washam Elementary
 Lake Wylie Elementary
 Lebanon Road Elementary
 Newell Elementary
 Selwyn Elementary
 Statesville Road Elementary
 Whitewater Academy
 Windsor Park Elementary
 Winget Park Elementary

“The Pizza Gardens give us an excellent platform to teach youth about healthy eating using a food they love,” said Zach Current from Fuel Pizza. “It is our pleasure to partner with the schools and the community to make this unique project available.”
