Catchy tunes have a way of getting stuck in your head. When that happens, the message is also more likely to stick.
Nationwide, most flood deaths happen in vehicles. Preaching the message of “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” in a solemn, somber way may be more fitting, but you might not remember it, especially when you have to make a split-second decision behind the wheel. That’s why Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services (CMSWS) asked residents to help them spread the in the form of a jingle.
CMSWS created the Sing the Jingle contest and put out the call to residents, asking them to put their own spin on the “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” jingle. The entries flooded in.
Entries were judged on how well the message of flood safety was conveyed, creativity, and originality. The winner and several other entrants will record their versions of the jingle in a local recording studio. Those versions will become CMSWS’s new flood safety commercials on local radio and TV stations.
