Mecklenburg County Solid Waste, Park and Recreation,Water Quality and Keep Mecklenburg Beautiful partnered this year for the 2013 Great American Clean Up. Held as a part of our local Earth Day activities, the team decided to clean up a section of Latta Plantation that had, over the decades, become a huge dumping ground.
Erin Oliverio who oversees Big Sweep was approached by Park and Rec to help with this project. She in turn asked Jake Wilson, the Executive Director of Keep Mecklenburg Beautiful if this could be included as part of the Great American Clean Up. Jake agreed and planning was set in motion for these County entities to come together.
Mecklenburg County Solid Waste supplied Gary Marshall and his team with clean up supplies. With their help, six 40-yard roll offs were filled with debris that had accumulated over the years, from refrigerators and cookers to roofing and guttering materials, carpet and wood.
After several weeks, the site was ready for the next step. Cleanup volunteers from all departments and members of the general public came together on Saturday, April 20 and spent three hours pulling out all of the smaller debris that had been dumped in the woods.

”We felt a tremendous sense of achievement at the conclusion to this project,” said Jake Wilson.”It just goes to show what can be done in the County by the County and its volunteers.”
