Around the world, May is International Internal Audit Awareness Month (IIAAM), and in North Carolina, Gov. Pat McCrory recently signed a proclamation to declare this to be so in the state, too.

During this observance and throughout the year, audit professionals work to raise awareness of the internal audit profession and its value to businesses and organizations. At its simplest, internal auditing identifies risks that could keep an organization from achieving its goals, and proactively recommends improvements to help managementmanage their risks.

According to Mecklenburg County Director of Internal Audit, Joanne Whitmore, “Internal auditors provide the Board of County Commissioners and County management assurance thatthe organization is operating as intended.”
