A group of 250 volunteers is working to bring the concept to reality. Many of them gathered on Oct. 15 for the kick-off event of The Mecklenburg Livable Communities Plan. The joint community initiative is expected to take 16 months and is supported by Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte, surrounding towns, and the Foundation for the Carolinas. This collaborative effort provides an opportunity to connect existing plans and identify commonalities that encourage and support a vibrant and healthy quality of life in our community. The ultimate goal is to have a finalized plan ready for adoption in February of 2015.
Organizers had originally hoped to bring together 120 citizens to make up the working groups. After receiving 250 applications, the scope of the plan expanded to make room for every volunteer.
The five work groups include:
- Community Life
- Economy and Jobs
- Built Environment
- Healthy Living
- Livability Forum
A series of community events will be scheduled over the next few months to allow citizens not in a working group the opportunity to provide feedback and guidance on the priorities, vision, and community goals for Mecklenburg County.
