It is also a time to celebrate all survivors of intimate partner violence.
Local events include free training sessions and a candlelight vigil. The schedule of events is online at DV Awareness Month Calendar of Events.
The month’s events kick off with the annual candlelight vigil honoring the fallen victims killed by their intimate partners in the State of North Carolina over the past year.
The vigil begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Beatties Ford Road Regional Library, 2412 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte, NC.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month began in 1981 with the National Coalition Against Violence Day of Unity. The intent was to bring together domestic violence advocates from across the country who were dedicated to ending violence against women and children. The Day of Unity soon became a special week when a range of activities were held at the local, state and national levels.
For more information on the effects of domestic violence in our community, call the Mecklenburg County Community Support Services Women's Commission at 704-432-SAFE or 704-336-3210 or Safe Alliance’s Shelter for Battered Women at (704) 332-2513.
