Tiamd is one of the social workers in the Homeless Support Services division of Mecklenburg County's Community Support Services. This year will be the third that she's teamed with local radio personality Bea Thompson for an Umbrella Drive for the Homeless.
The Third Annual Umbrella Drive for the Homeless is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013. The location is the County's Homeless Resource Center at 618 N. College St. in Charlotte. Thompson, who is community affairs director for WBAV-FM 101.9, plans to broadcast from the site.
Tiamd got the idea for the umbrella drive one day at work when she saw a mother with her children in the rain with only plastic garbage bags for covering. Tiamd gave the mother her umbrella. Now she hopes to have 1,000 new umbrellas to distribute.
Collaborating partner agencies offering services to individuals and families who are homeless receive the umbrellas and distribute them. Those agencies include:
- A Child's Place
- Alexander Youth Network (The Relatives)
- Crisis Assistance Ministry
- Blessings in the Storm
- Homeless Resource Center
- Men's Shelter of Charlotte
- McCreesh Place
- Moore Place
- New Beginnings
- Salvation Army Center of Hope
- Urban Ministry Center
- YWCA-Families Together and Women in Transition Programs
