BOCC MEETS APRIL 2

The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners meets April 2, at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, and will appoint 15 members to the Board of Equalization and Review, discuss a change to the Park and Recreation Ordinance relating to possession of handguns on certain park property, and receive an update from the Public Arts Commission.

PARK AND RECREATION'S 3RD ANNUAL HATS OFF TO PARKS LUNCHEON TO SUPPORT NEWTOWN MEMORIAL PLAYGROUND BUILD

The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department will hold the 3rd Annual Hats Off to Parks Luncheon on Friday, May 10, 2013, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Freedom Park. Hats Off to Parks is a fundraiser with proceeds benefiting park projects throughout the County. This year’s project will help fund a playground which will be built at Park Road Park in memory of the children and teachers lost in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn. COMMUNITY MEETINGS ANNOUNCED FOR MOORESVILLE TO CHARLOTTE TRAIL

The towns of Mooresville, Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville, the City of Charlotte, and Iredell and Mecklenburg counties will host a series of community meetings to inform the public about planning for the Mooresville to Charlotte Trail. The 30-mile trail will provide a corridor for bicycle and pedestrian transportation in the region. The first meeting is on April 2, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Charles Mack Citizens Center, 215 North Main Street, Mooresville. Learn more

NATIONAL HEALTH WEEK IS APRIL 1-7

The American Public Health Association and its partners kick off National Public Health Week today, an annual health observance dedicated to celebrating the extraordinary contributions of public health. This year’s theme “Public Health is ROI: Save Lives, Save Money” — highlights the important return on investments made in public health that prevent disease, save lives and curb health care costs.

RESERVATIONS NOW ACCEPTED FOR THE 6TH ANNUAL CRIME VICTIMS’ LUNCHEON

Reservations are being accepted now through April 12 for the 6th Annual Crime Victims’Luncheon which will take place on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Mount Moriah Primitive Baptist Church, 727 W. Trade Street, Charlotte. This year’s event will focus on human trafficking and feature Special Agent David Dawson of the FBI as keynote speaker. Tickets are $10. APRIL IS NATIONAL COUNTY GOVERNMENT MONTH

The National Association of Counties (NACo) celebrates National County Government Month each year in April. This year’s theme is “Smart Justice: Creating Safer Communities”. Locally we are highlighting our Criminal Justice Services with a month long series of initiatives, including web and news articles, TV spots celebrating the success of Treatment Courts, a high-rise banner on 4th St., and radio appearances by Criminal Justice staff.
